A Battle Cry

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, September 14, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 20:1-9

Key Verse: Psalm 20:9 (NLT): “Give victory to our king, O LORD! Answer our cry for help.

This is a Psalm for the moment. A call for national revival, help and victory. There is no better time that men and women of this world need to be united in prayer for the new king of England than now. Indeed, for all our world rulers and leaders. We are in such a time of impending war: morally, spiritually and physically. Without a shade of prejudice, we see a stern Islamic and atheistic struggle for the soul of England and for the future of our entire world. We are in both a bloodless combat (and ruthless jihad) for souls. Everyday, darkness seeks every means to put out the gospel light especially from the public life. Therefore, believers must unite as in the days of this psalmist to raise a battle cry to the Lord. As King Charles III, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II accedes to the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, he automatically takes on a spiritual office known as defender of the faith. The church must raise a timely battle cry for him—and, indeed, this is the scripture that inspire the 133 years of 'God Save the Queen,' the British national anthem, now changing to God Save the King.

While there are no clues as to the precise occasion on which this psalm was written; but one can clearly see the burden of a praying believer for a king who is needing to defend himself first, and then his people in a real battle. Make no mistake, we are all involved in this battle: the enemies are seeking to exterminate faith from our cultural heritage, and promote anguish, fear and terror instead. Therefore, let us arise and use the office of the defender of the faith as a point of contact to leaders, ministers, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, and children across the world. We need God to hear our battle cry and save our darkened world. We need Him to heal our broken hearts and body. We need God to save the future of our children from being crushed—whether through war, or pandemic, or social media, moral permissiveness, terrorism, or success, or even self indulgence. Let us raise this battle cry to our God. He has a heart of pitying love for us; to the God for whom nothing is too hard to change or too small for him to pay attention to. Let us be united in praying to God to save our kings, leaders, ministers, parents, children, homes and nations.

Quote for the Day: “Your threat means nothing to us. If you throw us in the fire, the God we serve can rescue us from your roaring furnace and anything else you might cook up, O king. But even if he doesn’t, it wouldn’t make a bit of difference, O king. We still wouldn’t serve your gods or worship the gold statue you set up.” (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for King Charles III. We use him as a point of contact to our leaders at every level in our cities and nations. Give them grace to bring truth, justice, and stability to our world. Give them power to do what is right and to rule in fairness and justice. And above all, make them, indeed, defenders of the faith — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
