Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 9, 2024
Today’s Text: Mark 1:39-45
Key Verse: Mark 1:40 (NASB): "And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.””
How often do people of this generation humbly approach Jesus with heartfelt plea? What about you as a person? Here is an account of a man who would not let his situation beat him down. Instead, his situation moved him to desperation and faith: a situation that was a debilitating and isolating disease. Something that made him an outcast. Yet, he dared to approach Jesus, hoping for a miracle.
Many in his days would isolate and reject him but Jesus' response is a beckon of hope to anyone cast down and rejected. In verse 41, we see how "Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed." Jesus is not only available to help. He is willing and able. He is always happy to heal, restore and bring wholeness.
This experience teaches a spiritual lesson to us that if and when we are humble and have faith, we too can experience transformation. Jesus is ever willing to touch and transform our lives, no matter how broken or isolated we may feel. His power and compassion can overcome even the most daunting challenges of our lives. Only we must approach Jesus with the same humility and faith as the leper, trusting in His willingness to transform our lives.
Our generation also struggles with different kind of leprosy. Things that beat us down such as emotional, mental, or spiritual afflictions, which isolate us and make us feel like outcasts: anxiety, depression, or mental health struggles, ddiction or substance abuse, relationship issues or feelings of loneliness, self-doubt, low self-esteem, or shame, chronic illness or pain, etc. The Jesus, who healed the leper, is still the same today. He is willing to bring healing and restoration to our lives if we approach Him with humility and faith, and trust in His power.
Action Steps: Acknowledge what your own "leprosies" are: the struggles and weaknesses. Seek Jesus and the fellowship of His children. Be honest and humble to ask for healing. And allow His touch: i.e., let Him work in your life and bring restoration.
Quote for the Day: "Faith does not move us to avoid crises. It moves us to find Christ." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, with a humble heart, I seek your transformative power in my life. I acknowledge my brokenness and desperation for your healing touch. Lord, please stretch out your hand and touch my life — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
