A Look of Hope

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, June 1, 2023

Today’s Text: Genesis 13:8-18

Key Verses: Genesis 13:14–15 (ESV): “The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.”

Perhaps we all are perfect reflection of our patriarch Abraham is. We like to judge by where we are and our immediate circumstances. We make statements of woes and regret our lot. We judge ourselves in the light of others whom we think are better than us, or just possess the best. Truthfully, Abraham’s immediate situations were not looking good. Apart from internal want if a heir, the plains and hills that surrounded his darkened eyes were all bare and desolate. No one could ordinarily perceive the blessings that are already lavished in advance except there is a new look of hope — the lifting up of the eyes.

As a new month dawns upon us, God wants us to anoint our eyes with salves, and shake off that beast of worries. You can refuse to dwell where you are without having to leave. God taught that secret to the father of faith—from the same place you’re seeing desolation, wastes, pain, loneliness, fruitless struggles—yes, from where you are, get a look of hope. Lift now your eyes. Quit being perplexed and overwhelmed. Just look by the Lord’s prompting. Lift up your eyes by faith: those empty plains will be populated with people as numerous as the sand of the Sea. You shall soon set up a fresh altar of thanksgiving in devout gratitude. For “as long as your eyes can see” the blessings, God said: “I have given them to you.” Welcome to your month of sunrise.

Quote for the Day: “The deepest darkness are not deep enough to darken the look of hope from seeing the sunrise.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, when all seems dark.

I need your light, Lord, in every way and everyday. Fill me with your light; cause me to see beyond the darkness. Cause me to bask in your promise with confidence, fully trusting You that all is well — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
