Today’s Text: Job 13:13-16
Key Verse: Job 13:15 (ESV): ”Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face.”
In the very midst of life’s deepest pains and most gut-wrenching experiences, faith in God, and love for Him are a twin ingredient needed to carry us through. A trial may be difficult but so long as the scriptures are true that say: “God never suffers the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22), and “God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13); we have all provisions to go through life victoriously.
Regardless of our anguish, our allegiance is unshakable, and our anchor holds. That’s the position of resolved believers. It was the position of Job. It was also true of the apostles. While Job’s utterance has been misconstrued by some, as a statement of regret and resignation, this is far from facts. If put in the context in which his friends perceived his predicament as a punishment for his unknown sin, we see a man who has no argument.
Rather, he demonstrates a submissive acceptance of unexplained or unexplainable chastisement, even though he was confident in his integrity. He was prepared to face the worse rather than break his faith in God. How often do we regret our right standing when not rewarded as we expect, or when not served as we deserve? But Job was obviously resolved against any such ill feelings.
"Though He slays me, yet will I wait for Him," he said. He may be sure there’s no evil shadows in God. His thoughts for him are good thoughts, not evil, to bring him to an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). So, He is not likely to slay me, he believes. But, even if..., let Him; but as for me, I have no other way than to wait for His next stroke. That is, if He is God, and that’s what He is doing, can I, being mortal, do any other than trust in Him? This was also true with Peter, in the New Testament, when others were scared off in the face of the Master’s most controversial instruction. So serious that “many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.” Peter took a trustful resolution like Job: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:66-68). We too can trust God in this way. All things in/of our lives are under Divine control. He did not let Job down; He will never let us down.
Quote for the Day: “God’s people should be comforted in hard times. After all, rocks that conceal treasures are harder rocks.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord (Psalm 16:5). Amen.
With all my Love and Prayer,
