Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, January 1, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalms 23:5 (NIV): “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Welcome to 2023: a year full of promises from God. The year to overflow. Indeed, the sun rises so brightly upon this year with great brilliance and bright hopes of healing in its wings. And I am so excited to prepare your heart for a series of blessings in the next few days of meditation on the revelation of Psalms 23. Specifically, God gave us verse 5 as our scripture of the year; and one cannot but wonder why Psalm 23 goes for the year 2023; but whatever God intends, I gladly welcome you to a season of deeper mediation together in His ever increasing word of truth this year in Jesus name.

Psalm 23 comes to us with a metaphor borrowed from scenes of pastoral life. No doubt, David, the acclaimed author was well familiar with shepherding flocks. Therefore, he is well aware of what’s in shepherding, and is therefore, in this scripture describing God's providential care in providing refreshment, guidance, protection, and abundance for His sheep fold. Understanding this Psalm is crucial to having, and enjoying confidence in God’s providential care and perpetual favor — yes, it is contingent upon our enjoying all the promises we have claimed and professed for the year. As believers in Christ, we are already conversant with the spiritual fact that Christ's relation to His people is often represented by the figure of a shepherd.

He is not just our Lord, He is our shepherd. And, he is the good shepherd for that matter. So get yourself ready to lay in His pastures this year in all spiritual matters and blessings. The first part of this psalm presents God’s guardian care in clear unmistakable way. This year, God’s guidance will be sure in your life. The second aspect of the text is  the shepherd’s invitation to his sheep to be hosted in His pastoral feasting table, where we have room even to dwell forever. I see an unending provision before us this year and in the coming years in Jesus name.

Quote for the Day: “When the Lord shepherds a man; he can rest from hustle and bustle of life — He makes him to lie down in unbreakable divine provision.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being my shepherd. You are the good shepherd. Yes, the great shepherd. Please, help me to trust in You and not focus on who or what bothers me right now. Be my stronghold and refuge throughout this new year — in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
