Today’s Text: Philippians 4:4-9
Key Verse: Philippians 4:6 (ESV): “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Worries or anxieties are more and more becoming common place in our generation. Every seems to be caught up in their web, one way or the other. They manifest in our lives as stress and take real physical toll on us, weighing us down and robbing us of what God is doing around us.
However, we are so blessed to have Paul’s letter to the Philippians, in which he encourages us not to worry. The apostle uses an exact repetition of our Lord’s command, “Take no thought” (Matthew 6:25, 36) in a different form “do not be anxious.” Believers who are in inevitable desperation, lonely situations, difficulties and dangers are prohibited from sinking below their loads of care.
No matter how heavy the burdens are, we may all rise above them if we learn the joy of “casting our care on Him who careth for us.” (1Peter 5:7) Though originally in imperative voice (i.e. a command for us to obey), the words may also be an entreaty (a plea or an admonition) — “Do not be anxious about anything!” Whichever way it is viewed, the apostle takes a stand with our Lord to make sure we give up worries in our lives in exchange with thankful living.
He prescribes a way to do this: by telling God about our concerns and then leaving them in His capable hands. Peter also admonishes us to cast our cares on the Lord. Those were also the Psalmist’s words — with an addition “...and he will sustain you; for he will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22) Our Lord promised to “give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Therefore, “do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Rather, “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, ...and be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)
Quote for the Day: “Science and faith are agreeable in just one thing: none of them has found a greater self destructive hobbit than anxiety.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I admit that I often forget that you are with me. I ask you to please forgive me for this omission; and help me to know and trust you better. Help me to live one day at a time, leaving my financial, relational, physical, social, spiritual, and emotional needs in your hands — in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
With all my Love and Prayer,
