Becoming Immovable

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, March 5, 2019

Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:58 (KJV): “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

The Israeli settlement of Netzarim in the heart of the Gaza Strip was a point of much conflict and attacks. Militant Palestinians tried so much to seize the city from the Jews for several years. Considering how dangerous the conflict became, Israeli government had to evacuate people from the settlement in 2005. But a few Netzarim inhabitants stayed put because they felt it was an important part of keeping their land free. When asked why he would take such great risk, one of those who stayed behind said, “I don’t live where it’s comfortable; I live where it’s important to live.”

How great would it be if and when Christians give up worrying about being comfortable and start to pay attention on things that are important to God.

Apostle Paul, having dedicated an entire chapter to the subject of resurrection, is now doubling down on why it’s so important for Christians or the church to prepare our mind for our day-to-day all-important service to God. Our hope for a resurrected undying body calls for steadfastness in our service to God. It’s so easy to forget the transient nature of this world, and settle for temporary and perishable things. But God wants His people to focus their minds on His service.

The message today is very simple: If we are confident in our promised hope, we trust that our labor is not in vain, therefore we shall, like settlers of Netzarim, be immovable. We shall always abound in the work of the Lord. Of course, It’s so easy to grow weak and faint-hearted in the face of attacks, persecution, terrorism and rejection; especially if we think that all your work for God and truth here might be wasted. But we are charged to be steadfast. Why? Our Lord’s resurrection guarantees that we shall one day also be raised from the dead. So, our labor for the Lord is never in vain.

Quote for the Day: “A steadfast heart seeks the slightest reason to continue to hold on to the strings. A faithful heart holds on even if there’s no more reason or no more strings.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear LORD, help me not to be shaken or agitated with the strifes, temptations, and cares of life. But to be fixed in the faith, and not allow the power of sin, or the permissiveness of the age to seduce me from the faith of the gospel. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
