Better than a Mother

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 14, 2023

Today’s Text: Isaiah 49: 10-26

Key Verses: Isaiah 49:15 (ESV): “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you."

The story was told of a good, pure, refined and cultured woman, who was found struggling to guide a man to safety. The man was badly drunk, and his form and look bore marks of deepest dissipation. A man said to her, "Woman, why are you with such man?" She ignored him and continued to support his unsteady steps. But the man said further: "Why not hand him over to the police?" So, the woman drew herself up with a righteously indignant anger, mixed with passion, and said, "Sir! I am his mother." The love of a mother is deep, all-embracing, all-accepting, nourishing, nurturing, warm, safe, and supportive. It unrelentingly soothes the places inside our hearts that feel scared and lonely.

But today’s text gives a yet a deeper assurance of a purer lover than mothers’. If you can imagine the love of the one who bore us; then you can catch a glimpse of that of the One who made us. It is clearly incomparably deeper and more deliberate than the heart and tenderness found in the disposition of woman for her child. God wants us to know that though a mother’s love is not enticed by prosperity or dispelled by adversity — yet it can fail and falter beyond our scope of belief. But the height and depth, length and breadth of God’s love for us defy all imaginable measures. Your mother may forget; He said. But I will not forget you. Your mom loves you; but God Himself is the love itself. Happy Mother’s Day to you all.m — especially all mothers.

Quote for the Day: A mother images the person and character of God on earth, sharing love among many children and yet each child never in want of deserving love. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we are grateful for our mothers and for all the women who desire the wonder of bringing forth new life. Please, grant to them all the courage to lift up their heads; and the blessing to be their very best. Please fulfill their joy and dreams — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
