Today’s Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 25, 2019
Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 15:17-31
Key Verse: 1 Samuel 15:22 (ESV): “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”
Obeying God has never been easy with man’s fallen nature. But we can learn from Saul’s story today. We can also learn from “Egyptian horses” which go through rigorous training that conditions them for full obedience to their master. Obedience is always a test of loyalty. That was how Egyptian horses were trained and tested. Deprived of water for many days, they’re turned loose to race towards the Nile only to be halted by a whistle upon getting to the edge of the water. Those among the horses that have learned obedience would turn around and race back to the trainer, who then gives them as much water as they need.
God is our Master Trainer. He knows just what we need and will not allow us to die of thirst, but He wants us to first trust Him, and show the same by obeying Him. He knows what we need. He is more than able and willing to supply them all, but we must trust and obey Him.
Looking at Saul, we may have seen a vivid picture of ourselves. We always pursue sacrifices, and always have excuses, or something to blame when not accepted. But God never accepts half baked loyalty from us. Rather than going through all religious motions, what He requires from us is an obedient spirit. Saul was strictly pursuing outward path and forms of religion, but failing in the deep core of heartfelt worship.
Quote for the Day: “All inspired writers agree in one thing: obedience is man’s constant, indispensable and necessary duty to God. Doing things is empty religion, when not done in perfect obedience. They positions us as priests offering sacrifices with polluted hand.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me Lord, so that rather than going through motions of religion, my life will be totally sown and sold to trusting and obeying You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
