Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 4:9 (ESV): ”Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.”
The great entertainer, Jimmy Durante, was on a Stage Show for World War II Veterans. Something interesting followed his monologue. Instead of taking a bow and leaving the stage after being applauded, he continued to stay. The applause grew louder and louder yet he kept staying. After several minutes, he finally took a bow and left the stage. Backstage, he explained how he had frozen to see, in the front row, two veterans, who have both lost an arm each in the war—one the right arm and the other the left. But they sat together so they may be able to clap. They clapped loudly and cheerfully and kept the celebrity frozen.
Our text today presents us a charge to shun the ideas of it’s immediate preceding and proceeding verses. A duty rests upon us to cultivate fellowship with our kind, and therewith produce highest benefits together. Verses 7 and 8 deal with selfish isolation, and verses 13 to 16 with the folly of self-seeking popularity. How God knows the hurts, betrayal and division we face with our in-genuine association, Judas kisses and bitter envy. How we seat with friends and brethren needing a hand, but yet intentionally fail to lend it. God is therefore bringing our obviously contradictory individuality into question. He wants us to accomplish more together He created us to be together. It is not good for man to be alone. Two are always better.
Quote for the Day: “Isolation is a rude denial of God’s design for man, and that is why he (man) can never reach his full potential in isolation. We are wired to be in mutual dependence and fellowship.“ (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, Your prayer at the end of your earthly ministry was: “that they may be one!” Please give us the grace to be one, Dear Lord. We ask in your most precious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
