By Him Alone

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, July 26, 2024

Today’s Text:  Zechariah 4:1-10

Key Verse: Zechariah 4:6 (ESV): "Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts."

Above is a message from God to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, during the post-exilic period. The Israelites were struggling to rebuild the Temple, and God was encouraging them to rely on His Spirit rather than their own strength or resources. Today, God wants us to look at his dealing with Zerubbabel and learn some lessons to remind us of the limitations of human power and might. He is saying that true success and accomplishment come not from our abilities, but from His Spirit working in and through us. It is therefore important that we all stay humble. It is our dependence on God, and the works of His Spirit within us that empowers us for service.

Don't we live, today, in a fast-paced, self-reliant world? O yes, we do! Especially, those of us who live in the West where everything seems to work. But this meditation is for us and for that believer on lonely mountains, trying to figure out how to reach men for Him. We must remember that our accomplishments are not the result of our hard work or talents, rather, it is God's Spirit that enables us to achieve His purposes on earth. This truth applies to all areas of our lives, including ministry, work, relationships, and personal growth. We must stay humble and stop referencing how much we sacrificed, prayed and fasted so that the success that people now see can happen. No, it's not by might, my man.

Yes, I know that some Christian leaders feel pressured to grow their work through marketing strategies and all manners of ideologies; but God's words to Zechariah is the same to us: true growth comes from the Holy Spirit, not our own efforts. We must rely on God's Spirit. We must focus on prayer and faithfulness, trusting God for the results. Yes, this is not to say: quit trying! Every effort to serve God is precious and valued. Don't quit trying or lose heart, even when the journey gets tough. Growth happens when in the midst of our struggles, we let God's word comfort us: it is by Him alone. And, of course, God might be using those moments to test, refine and strengthen us.

Action Steps: 1.) Always acknowledge your limitations and dependence on God. 2.) Seek the Holy Spirit's empowerment in your life and ministry. 3.) Trust God for the results, rather than relying solely on your own efforts. 4.) Cultivate humility and recognize the role of the Holy Spirit in your accomplishments.

Quote for the Day: "No great thing in creation or achievements is born of human strength. No. They all come by divine breath." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I acknowledge my limitations and dependence on You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, that I may be empowered to accomplish Your purposes. Help me to trust in Your strength, rather than my own, seeking Your guidance each passing day and moment. Let Your Spirit work through me, O Lord, to achieve great things for Your glory — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
