Choices

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 8:6-18

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 8:11 (NIV): "He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots."

Today, as America decides, we are reminded of when the Israelites were demanding a king, wanting to be like other nations, and Samuel, directed by God, warns them of the burdens a king will place on them. In our case as Americans, we are blessed by God to exercise our democratic right on every election. Let us ponder the significance of choices. In life's journey, we constantly face decisions that shape our destiny. I can only pray that on this Election Day, and every day, may our choices honor God and promote His kingdom.

God was pointing Israel's attention to their need to take responsibility and face the be prepared ro face consequences of their choices. God was speakimg to the Israelites that their decision comes with costs. This is also applicable to us. Thats is why thoughtful decision-making is key in all that we do; it is not just about power dynamics. Jesus teaches us also to "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (Matthew 7:13-14).

Our choices have consequences, impacting ourselves, others and our society. Like the prodigal son, we can choose paths that lead us astray or return to our loving Father (Luke 15:11-31). Every decision presents an opportunity to align with God's will or stray from it. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." As we make choices, may we seek divine guidance, weighing options against biblical truths, and may our decisions reflect God's love, will and wisdom.

Action Steps: Understand that your choices have eternal consequences.Seek God's will in decision-making. Trust divine guidance. Align your choices with biblical principles.

Quote for the Day: "Decision theology or decisionism is the divine command, authority or permission that all men enjoy from and through God to make informed, conscious and responsible choices." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You who reign supreme in the affairs of Your people; bless the land and people of the United States of America as we experience another majoy turn in our nation's history. Hp us to find solace in Your embracing arms. Let not our sins tear us apart so that Your love could not mend us. Just as the prodigal son did, may we all return from our sensual choices and may our hearts find Your transformative love — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
