Today’s Scripture Threshing for Thursday, March 21, 2019
Today’s Text: Mark 6:30-37
Key Verse: Mark 6:31 (AKJV): ”And he said to them, Come you yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”
Matthew’s gospel in 10:23 and Luke’s gospel in 10:17-22 provides us a clear parallel to events leading to our Lord’s assertion in our key verse today. A lot had happened in the foregoing verses. News of the murder of John the Baptist, the Master’s faithful forerunner had reached them. It’s not just a news anymore, for his body had been laid in a sepulchre. The Seventy’s return from spiritual exploits was another main one. The needs of the wearied and wearying multitude was no mean one too.
Christ provides rest for those who are tired, and refuge for those that are terrified. No one is ever sent away empty from the Master except the one who come to Him full of self’s. For He is the bread of life to the hungry, and has appointed His servants to all these kingdom business. Yet, He doesn’t careless about their wellbeing. He cares for His ministers as much as He does for those to whom they minister.
He is conscious of us when we grief. He is aware of our weariness. He is touched by the feelings of our infirmities. The same way as He fed men who sought His spiritual food with bread that ministers to the wants of their bodily; He cares for His ministers and friends. “Come ye yourself and rest!” He said! Many of us need to learn the power of rest from our Lord, who sleeps even when tempests rage.
He gives rest. He had chosen us as His instrument of rest; but He wants us ourselves to come apart. If we ruin our physical body, how shall we preserve and nourish spiritual life in it. Already, He had proven more than enough that He has bread enough at His command. He had shown us how He is able to take care of our needs so much that we’ll soon have gathered baskets of leftovers. So, come apart, give up struggles, rest!
Quote for the Day: “Until we fail to see rest as idleness, even when we lay down in the most seclusive corners of life, our hearts and minds would still not be free from labor.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear LORD, I’ve been so prone to efforts, and value life in terms of what I produce. This keeps me from coming apart into your presence, being as close as You desire. Help me Lord to take solace in your presence rather than in doing things. I choose to rest and abide in you. Amen.
