Complaining is a Choice

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, September 29, 2023

Today’s Text: Habakkuk 3:17-19

Key Verse: Habakkuk 3:18 (NKJV): “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

Eunice Sandborn, a Texan who became the world’s oldest living person on her 114th birthday in 2010 had said that she not only loves everything about her life, but she also has “no complaints” at all. Of course, if she had wanted to complain, she would have had many things accumulate throughout her 114 years to complain of. Yet, she demonstrated that complaining is a choice.

In the late 1800’s, George Mueller operated an orphanage of 1,000 orphans. One morning there was no food to eat. But instead of sitting low, grumble and complain, Mr. Mueller gathered all the children and moved them to thank God for the provision of food, even though no food was on the table. A few moments later a baker showed up reporting how God had led him to bake bread for the orphanage night before. While he was yet speaking, a milk merchant also showed up with a truckload of for the orphanage. The Lord sometimes cuts off provisions to see that we understand truly that man does not live by bread alone.

The scripture text before us thus implies that the manner in which the best and greatest of God’s blessings flow toward us is when we live grateful as an attitude despite our situation—and that is what is called gratitude. The prophet sets us an example of how, instead of sitting down upon the heap of our ruins, we can take comfort in God’s saving grace, and even praise him for salvation in all metaphorical senses. When we feel full, we must learn to enjoy God in all, but when, we ever feel emptied and poor, yet, we must also enjoy all in God. We must nurture lifestyle of being filled with holy joy regardless of what life brings. We must keep the world in view, and teach them the, indeed, we can complain but we choose not to.

Quote for the Day: “Our hearts’ posture matters to God—He cares whether we are pridefully entitled or humbly grateful for the blessings we receive.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I thank you for being with me, especially during trying times. I thank you for using those seasons to bring me closer to you. And let there be no time, O Lord, when your praise shall cease from my mouth. Please use every season and situation of my life to praise You — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
