Correct Emblem

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, July 28, 2022

Today’s Text: John 13:31-36

Key Verse: John 13:35 (ERV): “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Back in my days as the national head of the Royal Ambassadors (RA) of Nigeria, I visited a State Command; and as a mark of respect, a guard of honor was mounted for me. And because the strength of a guard of honor is in its uniformity, the Guard Commander, after saluting me and other dignitaries, marched up to me and escorts me to inspect the Guard. As I walked through their ranks that day, I noticed a breach — one of them wore a uniform with a Scout’s emblem. And though the uniform was RA, but because the emblem was wrong, he was spotted and singled out. The life of a Christian is a daily guard of honor inspected and censured, each passing moment, by the watching world. Our only emblem is here declared by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Don’t mess up your guard of honor with a wrong emblem. You will be spotted by all men. They would know that you are not Christ’s disciple.

The passage before us today says what the emblem of a true Christian is. It is not in his membership of a congregation or demonstration of spiritual gifts — no, it is not in ministry engagement and outward display of charity. The only mark of anyone that is born of God, who may be recognized as Christ’s disciple is the emblem of love. Each follower of Christ must live a life of inseparable fruit of active faith demonstrated in genuine love for Christ and other Christians. That is the badge of a true disciple of Christ. A member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Space Force, that appears in a wrong uniform portrays an identity that discredit the armed forces. We may have been so hateful in our former life, but the moment we come to follow Jesus Christ, we come into a new life in which lions and lambs flock together. We all become melted and molded by Christ's love. Indeed, a Christian who displays a lack of love for other Christians puts on a wrong emblem before the watching world.

Quote for the Day: “The Church’s only bond of union that links her to her groom, Jesus Christ, and to one another is love.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please teach me true love. Help me to be a trusting, respectful, understanding, and caring believer in you. Fill me with a desire for true love in my life — the kind of love that makes me long for the fellowship with brethren — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
