COVID: the Cry, the Cause and the Christ (Part One)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, March 16 2020

Today’s Text: Numbers 21:1-9

Key Verse: Numbers 21:9 (KJV): ”And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”

From the Old Testament, Israel in the wilderness being bitten by fiery serpents. The venom-virus plagued their veins, causing the people burning pain, torpor, and death. This foreshadows and symbolizes entire humanity lying in spiritual misery and death for rejecting and reviling God. When we reject God, He allows man’s enemy to inflict pain and horror on earth as a punishment for our sins. Our actions bring us such pains as COVID-19 and the likes.

But in the New Testament reality, when Jesus said, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,” He reveals that it is only in Himself that heaven and earth meet. He is both the representative of humanity, and the solution to all heart-cries. Entire humanity has been made subject to satanic serpentine manipulation; but the Cross of Christ has been lifted up on Calvary so that anyone who looks and calls the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Quote for the Day: "Death reigns by sin, but forgiveness, restoration and life reign by the atonement of Christ.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me and help our world to embrace and appropriate the saving grace that’s available in Jesus Christ alone. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
