Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 18, 2020
Today’s Text: Numbers 21:1-9
Key Verse: Numbers 21:7 (KJV): ”Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us...”
Israel’s journey through the wilderness is a clear type and forecast of our own daily journey through life. Their story of grumbling puts our family album perfectly before our faces: so that we have no doubt as to why we too relate with God’s goodness discontentedly. They despised the manna, which images God’s word of eternal life; we despise the same.
The peninsula of Sinai, where they journeyed abounded with most poisonous species of mottled snakes but God did not allow any to harm them until their hardness of heart went up to Him. Don’t we likewise interact daily with incredible viral networks and God keeps us? Coronavirus therefore, is a global call to repentance. In this text, however, we have an assurance that if we, like the repentant Israel, cry to God for mercy, we have gracious offer of pardon, and a solution through the Living Balm of Gilead. Just as the ravenous serpents called the people back to God, we too are being called to our knees, to cry out to God for repentance. And He will hear from heaven and heal our land.
Quote for the Day: "Ravaged by terrors that waste our land, God calls our age to a humble acknowledgment of our sins, and to repentance.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, we are forced to our knees. Please forgive us our sins and heal our land, in Jesus Christ alone. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
