Crucified with Him

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Monday, April 22, 2019

Today’s Text: Romans 6:1-11

Key Verse: Romans 6:6 (ESV): “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

It’s easier to look at the cross of Jesus Christ, and picture ourselves, perhaps, among the sorry crowd which stood by or at a distance, helplessly watching the horrifying scene. We may even imagine we were among His killers, owing to our sins and wicked acts. Or, we may even feel like we fit better in the category of one of those thieves that hung next to Him on either sides.

We belong, in some degree, to all these positions. Our sins put him on the cross. Each action of disobedience to God drove nails into His arms and feet. We mock Him by despising His words, and we make Him a liar. But we even take a deeper spiritual position at the cross scene than these. We are not just His crucifiers, or His mockers; but we are, by all means and standards crucified with Jesus—a much befitting (considering our sins) and a much hopeful place to be (considering His atonement). That is, we are not just far off from him, next to him, or holding the hammer; but hanging with him on the cross with our old life, guilt and condemnation nailed.

Paul explains that our sinful nature was placed on the cross and conquered for us. So that all the congeries of evil habits acquired as a result of the Fall was crucified, mortified, put to death and/or killed on the cross. Therefore, it is no longer necessary for us to serve sin, to be slaves to our corrupt desires and emotions. The victory that Christ won on the cross sets us free to serve him. Praise the Lord!

Quote for the Day: “One great victory over the power of sin and condemnation is for a man to locate Himself not just far off from the cross, next to it, or holding the hammer; but hanging with Christ on the cross with our old life, guilt and condemnation nailed.” (Simon Olatunji)

*Prayer:* Dear Lord Jesus, by your death on the cross, free me from this captivity and darkness of sin. Help me take up, and walk in the victory you’ve achieved for me on the cross. Amen.
