Our Text: Ephesians 4:25-32
Key Verses: Ephesians 4:32 (NIV): “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
After the Civil War, Robert Lee visited a Kentucky lady who took him to the remains of a grand old tree in front of her house where she bitterly relived her memory of how its limbs and trunk were destroyed by Federal artillery fire. But after a brief silence, Lee said, "Cut it down, my dear Madam, and forget it." It is better to forgive the injustices of the past than to allow them to remain, and let bitterness take root and poison the rest of your life.
So that the root of bitterness does not grow itself into a monstrous hindering tree, the apostle Paul here admonishes us to, in the spirit of Christ, let kindness take the place of bitterness; tender-heartedness the place of wrath and evil-speaking; and a loving, hearty forgiveness the place of malice. No root or tree of bitterness must be allowed to sprout and grow. It provokes filthy words, which corrupt both the speakers and hearers. We must cut it down.
We must see to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled. (Hebrews 12:15) Except the world sees that our union with Christ truly produces true kindness and courteousness in us, how shall they be drawn, looking at us, to the love of Christ?
Quote for the Day: "How dare I, who offended so grievously and was forgiven so graciously, not forgive anyone who offends me?!” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Father, fill my heart with your love towards others. Touch others through your kindness in me. Let your love, peace and forgiving spirit consume my thoughts and actions, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
