Today’s Text: Proverbs 22:22-29
Key Verse: Proverbs 22:24–25 (ESV): ”Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.”
The rattlesnake is renown for a funny kind of anger that releases its own deadly poison into itself. Sometimes, when this snake feels cornered, it becomes so angry that it bites itself. A man who harbors hatred or bitterness in his heart is either like a rattlesnake himself, or like someone who falls into a den of rattlesnakes. He releases dangerous poison into his own life just like the angry rattlesnake, and in turn becomes a danger to his environment.
The Bible teaches that uncontrolled anger is harmful, both to the person who harbors it and to those around him. Although anger may be justified at times, especially in those rare and holy occasions when righteous indignation erupts. But, at large, the Bible discountenance those who continue to have “fits of anger.“ The injunction in our text is do not go with angry men. Check-listing the fruit of the spirit and works of the flesh in Galatians 5: 19-21 also makes New Testament’s position clear about anger.
In scriptures, God sets different principles in place to help a person deal with anger because it ruins. Proverbs present it as Angry foolish and dangerous, a curse on those given to them. Why is it a curse? An angry man is a rattlesnake. Anger in his life is blinding and destructive, causing us to fight and to sin in many different ways.
Quote for the Day: “With God alonge is when anger is not a sin. His is a holy indignation against ungodliness. Ours is never with the right person, never to the right degree, never at the right time, never for the right purpose, and never in the right way. Therefore, it is in our best interest to eschew anger.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I come to You, asking for your help against all my struggle with the bitterness and anger that lurks deep within the soul. Help me, through Your Holy Spirit, to deal with this disease, Lord, in Jesus Christ’s most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
