Today’s Texts: Ephesians 4:25-32
Key Verse: Ephesians 4:30 (NIV): "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

Today's admonition is a cautionary meditation to wake us up to the fact that though the Holy Spirit is gentle, it is also grieveable. We have often heard that He is our gentle guide, teacher, and comforter (John 14:26, 15:26; 16:7), who works in our lives with a gentle, loving touch. Yet, despite His gentleness, the Holy Spirit can be grieved or sorrowed by our actions and choices (Eph 4:30).
To "grieve the Spirit" is a biblical concept that refers to causing sorrow or pain to the Holy Spirit, who lives within us as believers in Christ (Eph 4:30). We do this when we offend or hurt the Spirit through our thoughts, words, or actions. This may be by sinning willfully and persistently (Heb 10:26-27); resisting or quenching the Spirit's guidance and promptings (1 Thess 5:19); living in disobedience and rebellion (Eph 4:17-19); harboring bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness (Eph 4:31-32); and also by engaging in idolatry and worldly desires (Eph 4:17-19).
Grieving the Spirit has severe consequences. It leads to a sense of spiritual dryness and emptiness; loss of spiritual joy and peace; a decrease in spiritual growth and effectiveness; and a feeling of distance from God. How grievous it is to grieve the Spirit! The Holy Spirit, our Comforter and Guide, who dwells within us, desires to fill us with joy, peace, and love. Yet, we often grieve Him with our thoughts, words, and actions.
When we choose to sin, we pierce the heart of the One who loves us most. We hinder His work in our lives and quench the fire of His presence. Let us not grieve the Spirit, but rather yield to His gentle whispers and follow His leading. The good news is that we can avoid grieving the Spirit when we seek to live a life pleasing to God; listen to and obey the Spirit's promptings; live contrite lives by confessing and repenting of our sin; cultivate a heart of forgiveness and love; and prioritize our relationship with God above all else.
Let us, therefore, be mindful of the Spirit's presence and to live in a way that honors and respects Him each passing day and moment. We are children of His grace and have been sealed by the same Holy Spirit of promise. It behoves us to strive to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's gentle leading and avoid causing Him sorrow through our thoughts, words, and actions.
Quote for the Day: "The Holy Spirit is not a cowardly guide; He is a brave and loyal Companion who will never leave us nor forsake us." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your steadfast love that endures forever. Please forgive me for the times I have grieved the Holy Spirit. Help me to be sensitive to His presence and to follow His leading. May my life be a testimony to Your love and grace, and may I never grieve Your Spirit again — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
