Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 2, 2024
Today’s Text: Galatians 6:1-10
Key Verse: Galatians 6:10 (NIV): "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."
We all love opportunities don't we? The apostle was so sure that we do. So, he found a better opportunity and encourages us to take advantage of it: doing good and showing kindness to all people. Especially living a life of service, kindness, and generosity within the body of Christ. The apostle was clear about intentionality here. We are to look for opportunities to do good to everyone around us. We have tendency to excuse our non compliance on the ground that the needies did not let us know they have those needs. Yes, they should but they may not. But we are told to seek out the opportunities to do service, show kindness, and demonstrate generosity.
-The book of Galatians was written by Paul to the early Christian churches in Galatia (modern-day Turkey) to address the issue of legalism vs. grace, as some Jewish Christians were trying to impose Jewish laws and customs on Gentile (non-Jewish) believers. But it was- Paul argument that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by following the law. But as he concludes the letter, he started emphasizing the importance of quitting legalistic Christianity and living out our faith in practical ways. For instance: bearing one another's burdens; doing good to all people, especially fellow believers; and not growing weary in doing good.
Who are the people in your life that you can do good to today as a proof of your faith in the One who went about doing good?- What opportunities do you have to do good to fellow believers in our spiritual family and community? Yield this call to action. Seize every chance to show kindness and generosity to everyone. This will help you to live out your faith in tangible ways. Look for opportunities to serve your local community. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Participate in a neighborhood clean-up. Visit the elderly. Nurture relationships with loved ones. Show appreciation, empathy, and support. Be mindful of daily civic interactions, such as holding the door for someone, maintaining the queue, offering our seat for disabled or elderly persons, offering a smile, or simply being present for others. Let us invest in people around us by showing genuine interest and care.
Action Steps: Take one opportunity today to do good to someone around you. It could be a small act of kindness, a listening ear, or a helping hand. Watch how God uses your actions to bring joy and encouragement to others.
Quote for the Day: "Do good wherever you can, to whoever you can, whenever you can by whatever you have. It is never whatever we have that matters, but however we have served." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to see the opportunities around me to do good to others. Give me a heart of kindness, generosity, and compassion. Enable me to seize every chance to serve, support, and show love to those around me, especially my fellow believers. Let my actions always be a reflection of Your love and grace in my life, and use me to be a blessing to others — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
