Today's Text: Revelation 7:9-17
Key Verse: Revelation 7:14b (ESV), "...They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
In today's passage, John describes a vision of the great multitude of martyrs who have been slain for their faith in Jesus Christ. These believers from every nation, tribe, people, and language have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb and now stand before the throne of God, worshiping Him day and night. I welcome you to a 16 series meditation on lessons from the powerful and ultimate sacrifice of the 21 Coptic Martyrs: 20 Egyptian and 1 Ghanaian Christians who were brutally beheaded by ISIS militants on a Libyan beach in 2015. As they knelt before their executioners, they prayed and professed their faith in Jesus Christ, refusing to renounce their Lord even in the face of death.
Their willingness to lay down their lives for the sake of the Gospel demonstrates the depth of their commitment to Christ and His kingdom. As believers, we are called to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel, even if it means facing persecution or hardship. Concerning the great multitude of martyrs standing before the throne of God, one of the 24 elders explains the joy of these individuals who have come out of the great tribulation, having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." This images a metaphor for the cleansing power of Jesus' blood just as the Old Testament's high priest washed his robes and make them white before entering the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.
If truly we too have been to Jesus and washed clean by His blood, which removed our sins and made us pure and holy, then we too can stand steadfast in joy and hope through trials. The power of Jesus' blood washes away our sins and makes us pure and holy. We must be willing to pay the ultimate price for our faith with the lively hope that someday we too shall stand before the throne of God, worshiping Him and enjoying eternal life. This passage reminds us that our present sufferings are temporary and that we have a sure hope of eternal life with Jesus. It encourages us to persevere in our faith, even when faced with challenges and difficulties.
Action Steps: Reflect on the areas where you need to be more willing to sacrifice. Pray for believers around the world who are facing persecution and hardship because of their faith. Ask God to give you the courage and strength to stand firm in your faith, even in the face of adversity.
Quote for the Day: "The blood of Jesus is the seed that planted the church; those of the martyrs are the water that nurture it." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Let Us Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, I come before You today, remembering the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the many martyrs who have given their lives for the sake of the Gospel, including the 21 Coptic Martyrs. Give me the courage and strength to stand firm in my faith, even in the face of adversity. May I be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel, knowing that You are worthy of my devotion — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
