Today’s Text: Nehemiah 4:1-14
Key Verse: Nehemiah 4:14 (KJV): “Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
Danish fairy tales feature Goblin—some idea of a goddess—which of course is fictitious and no god at all. To them Goblin wanted to sell his tools; so he arranged an auction in which he displayed spite, guile, grudge, vile, feud, despair, and many other tools that he had used. He marked every piece very low, except the one labeled despair. When bidder worried why he wanted so much for this tool which had more wear than the rest, Goblin explained that it has always been his most useful tool.
Goblin depicts Satan, and he would indeed have been out of business if no one priced his tools. Many Christians run from tools that they thought was evil, but unfortunately, are not Satan’s most important tool. Unfortunately, what most people unsuspectingly buy from him is his most prized. It is said to be despair—the spirit of discouragement. The enemy knows how to use despair as a wedge to get into a man’s spirit when all other weapons fail.
Practically most humans pay dearly for this tool yet we continue to let the devil wield it against them. Nehemiah was a man of like passion as we are. He struggled with discouragement. Satan raised up Sanballat and Tobiah, two rebel leaders to make Nehemiah despair so that he will not repair the wall of Jerusalem. You can’t be in despair and build up the wall that God is calling you to build. The goal of despair is always to tear down. And it takes the form of discouragement, fatigue and fear. We need strong faith in God to fight fear and despair.
Quote for the Day: “Except our faith is brought under the wedging test of discouragement, we are unable to tell the devil, “you are such a goblin!” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to trust and rest in Your promise of all the things that You set before me. I take courage in going up and possessing my possessions. As You have spoken to me; so shall it be. I shall not fear or be discouraged — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
