Faithfulness Preferred

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Today’s Text: Proverbs 28:16-21

Key Verse: Proverbs 28:20 (ESV): ”A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.

Riches are not inconsistent with God’s kingdom and will. He gives riches. And of course, the Bible never denounce riches. But it cautions us to beware of the dangers of trust in them, excessive cravings for them, and the likelihood of unhealthy conduct towards them.

Today’s scripture emphasizes the better pathway towards abounding in God’s blessings. No doubt, a hardworking man may be blessed; but the man who abounds with or in blessings is the faithful man. No, not the hardworking man, not even the church going man; but, a man that deals very faithfully in moral and social matters, who does not meet out false balance, who is true to his work, makes good his promises, fulfils his contracts, abides by the obligations he lays upon himself, true to every trust reposed in him whether great or small — we have an Old Testament beatitude for such men. They abound with the blessings. God blesses and curdles them, man praises and values them.

The hasty-to-be-rich man faces a contrary commendation: he shall not be innocent!

The reason is simple. He is over anxious, and is driven by immodest desires for riches. To him, the end justifies the means. So, he pursues every method of obtaining his desires. Making haste for riches isn’t just about fraud or doing anything injurious to other; but if you’d rather deploy all your might and labours night and day for riches which you’re not willing to do for God, you will not be innocent. Because you have replaced the eagerness for God with much anxiety for riches. You’re not innocent of covetousness.

Be that faithful man. Deals truly and justly in all matter. Don’t be the man that makes haste. It needless to want to grab more than God allows.

Quote for the Day: “Gain all the riches you may on earth, but make sure you don’t lose heavenly things that earthly riches can’t buy.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear LORD, you know my heart and our desires. Help me not to focus on earthly wealth at the expense and detriment of my heart, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayer,
