Today’s Text: Exodus 32:1-24
Key Verse: Exodus 32:21 (ESV): ”And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?”
In this devotional message, and for several days to come, shall be carefully trusting God to take us on/through a journey of biblical accounts of men and women, who, by all accounts, were in close contact with the Holy and lived day-by-day in the presence of God, or a divinely appointed messenger of God; and yet could not draw out the needed or necessary or resulting blessing.
From Aaron, Miriam and Korah, Moses' cousin, we shall take a journey through the Bible for direction and a pathway for us, who serve in the front seat ministries, and/or are close to the holy things today.
Today’s text sets us to begin with Aaron. His calling and destiny was to flourish under Moses, where he will become the traditional founder and head Israel’s priesthood. God’s plan for him is to support his brother, Moses, to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt. However, in today’s text, we see how easy it is for men and women who are close to holy things to presume and act with human spur rather than on divine instance.
It is a sin of familiarity with the holy that brought presumptuous sin for Aaron, who thought he was as well qualified to step into the priestly order and assignment of Moses. That was why he listened to the people, and actually led them on in the way to destruction! In all probability he was afraid of offending the people, who were assembled in numbers, and he had not courage to resist their sinful desires.
Are you so close to God’s altar and grace? Are you involved in the front seat ministries? You need to ask God for the grace not to be presumptuous. The “we too are called” syndrome and sin. Ordinarily, the sacredness of spiritual office should help our character and keep us from sin. But we often get on easy familiarity with God that we think we are deluded to act as if we are supermen, who could now do and undo.
Whenever we assume and presume before God without His consent and leading; and we put the most important interest of the holy (the divine) in jeopardy; and descend or ascend from our allotted exalted ground to occupy a different (erroneous) moral ground—we are in familiarity sin of Aaron. We are leading others, who watch us into sin. David knows the grievousness of that sin. So, he prayed, "Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins." (Psalms 19:13)
Quote for the Day: “No matter the height we have attained in our spiritual journey; we are still men of God, not supermen, and not angels. The only thing that separates us is grace.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, sin is a mystery. It brings estrangement from your grace. Please help me Lord to flee the sins that so easily beset, and robs men from your grace, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayer,
