Familiarity with the ‘Holy’ (Part 12)

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 14:31-46

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 14:37 (ESV): “And Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” But he did not answer him that day.

Rashness is often a cause of great spiritual, financial and physical trouble for people of all ages. It is usually a twin brother of presumptuous sin. It’s a state of spiritual deficit that seeks to make up by oneself what is spiritually lacking. That’s why in Acts 19:36 we have a standing admonition: “Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.”

Like Saul, many of us do several things that are not required of us to make up for spiritual deficit and short fall. We do because we take God’s grace and our liberty for license. We assume that we are always covered by grace; so we omit such Biblical caution that we cannot, by any means, continue in sin so that grace may abound (Romans 6:1). We often let our familiarity with God’s mercy and grace lead us to take the grace of God with levity.

King Saul uttered his oath without deliberation and consultation with God, his actions were born from a false zeal in which he had more regard to himself and his own kingly power than to the cause of the rule of God. This always lead to improper worship attitude toward God. And anytime we ever feel comfortable with anything less than worship hat is in spirit and in truth, we are on the zone of familiarity sin. For Saul, God did not attend that service; He may not for us also.

Quote for the Day: “Empty spiritual worship brings deprivation of God’s grace and glory. It promotes self or vain glory.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, deliver me from a rash and inconsistent spirit. Help me to walk worthy of your grace and never take it lightly—in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayer,
