Today’s Scripture Threshing for Sunday, April 7, 2019
Today’s Text: Numbers 12:1-9
Key Verse: Numbers 12:2 (ESV): “And they said, ‘Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?’ And the Lord heard it.”
Mariam was there when Moses was born. She played key role in outsmarting the structure of Egypt’s cruelty against him when he was born. She hid in the reeds and waited to see what would happen. She watched him into safety, and played the senior when he was growing in the court of Pharaoh. Therefore it was easy to look down on Moses, and talk down on him: “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?!”
For not hesitating to despise Moses and speak against him, God struck her with leprosy so much that she had to be put out of the camp, in the place of all unclean persons (cf.: 5: 1-4). Once again, as with Aaron;s presumptuous sin, God is sending us a word of caution to all of us who serve close to the frontline of front seat of ministry.
Don;t miss it: leprosy, in Bible days, is perceived more as a spiritual disease than physical. Though Mariam’s was physical, but a great majority of people stand in worship and service today, covered with spiritual leprosy due to idols brought to their heart because of slander and misguided tongues.
The wise preacher warns us: “Do not be hasty to speak, and do not let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God...” (Ecclesiastes 5:) In the words of Jesus, we are clearly admonished that what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.” (Matthew 5:18-20)
Beware of familiarity with the “holy!” This is a very destructive sin and is common among siblings, friends, couples, and prophetic ministries.
Quote for the Day: “Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.” (Deuteronomy 24:9)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help me Lord not to sin against you in my words and in my heart, in Jesus name. Amen.
