Familiarity with the ‘Holy’ (Part 5)

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, April 10, 2019

Today’s Text: 2 Kings 5:8-14

Key Verse: 2 Kings 5:11 (ESV): “But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.

We are on an interesting spiritual journey. So far God has taken us through several aspects of the sin called familiarity with the holy: from presumptuous sin to familiarity syndrome, to rebellion, and to despisement, our common call is to beware!

Today, a totally different dimension is set before us, which many of us fail to identify as a dangerous form of familiarity with the holy. It is an arrogant spirit that cause us to ignore grace, fail to acknowledge/recognize unsung heroes of our lives—men and women whom God chose to be our destiny helpers, our prophets, our life’s opportunity-midwives.

The same ways in which this powerful Aramean warlord commonizes his young Israelite slave-girl is not very different from the way he commonizes prophet Elisha. This reveals that it’s not discriminatory or contempt of degree or hierarchy, but a degraded attitude that’s so easily moved to degrade others, whom one considers as less privileged or valuable.

The problem with Naaman is not that he did not like the muddy look of Jordan; but pride and arrogance before foolish and weak things chosen by God to bless us can make us ready to return home, angry, upset, frustrated and failed. We scorn their appearance, doubt their simplicity, and despise their authority. We may need to learn from the fact that Jesus, our Lord had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. No stately form or majesty that might catch our attention, no special appearance that we should want to follow him. (Isaiah 53:2)

Quote for the Day: “The paganism called secularity has entrenched itself in pride, self-reliance, self worship so much that Christlike humility and simplicity is no more attractive or acceptable.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, give me a humble spirit and a sensitive heart to relate with everyone wisely and humbly, whom you have placed in me life to bless and help me, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayer,
