Today’s Text: Psalm 130:1-8
Key Verses: Psalm 130:7 (ESV): “O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.”
We all come to junctures of life in which something major seems so awkward and we just can’t find strength from within. Whoever the writer of this Psalm is, he calls out to God from the depths of a dead end of pain, hoping for God's attention and help. We all come to such points. But perhaps the difference between us and this psalmist is on the point of reposing the right confidence that God will hear and respond to our every cry of pain. The writer seems to understand God’s mercy, and so insists on waiting upon Him based upon who He (God) is.
He likens his determination to wait on the Lord till he finds strength to the patience of men who guard a city; of women who wait by the sick; or of worshippers tarrying for the morning sacrifice—who kindle incenses, light the lamps, mingle fervent prayers with holy tears, and pine for the hour when the lamb shall smoke upon the altar. The Psalmist claims he waited more than these, and more expectantly before the great Adonai.
May we learn from such unique and unrivaled eagerness as we trust God for every needed strength in our lives. Regardless of our pain, may we learn to be thus hungry and thirsty after God! That is the secret of passing from weariness to strength. Let us learn how to long for the favor of the Lord more than weary sentinels long for the morning light. Never give up until your change comes (Job 14:14). Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the LORD (Psalms 27:14).
Quote for the Day: “Money, fame, power, family, people, friends — we aspire to lean upon these for strength; but true strength comes from knowing Jesus, and leaning upon Him.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I put my trust in You. Please grant me the strength to persevere, the courage to stand firm in my convictions, the hope to trust in Your unfailing love and grace, and patience for the strength and grace that comes from waiting upon You — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
