God’s Enduring Mercies

Today’s Scripture Threshing for Friday, April 26, 2019

Today’s Text: Psalm 136:1-16

Key Verses: Psalm 136:1–2 (ESV): “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Among the fascinating story of the Christian Church that aptly pictures God’s mercy is that of a mother that once approached Napoleon seeking a pardon for her son. The young man had committed the same crime twice, and the emperor ruled that justice demanded death. But the mother explained that she did not ask for justice: “I plead for mercy.” She said. However, when Napoleon insisted that her son does not deserve mercy, “Sir,” the woman cried, “it would not be mercyif he deserved it, and mercyis all I plead.” On that note, Emperor Napoleon was moved to have mercy, and spared the woman’s son.

No one of us deserves God’s mercy; but He bestows it most lavishly. In today’s text, the Psalmist brings the refrain of God’s enduring mercies over and over again because he knows we are all liable to forget we are product of God’s enduring mercies. Another reason for this repetition is so as to impress the importance of the message upon us. He knows that unless we deliberately bring our heedless or forgetful heart and minds to be so mindful, we’d take life and all the goodness we receive in every ramification for granted.

Our charge today is to always give thanks to God, first for who He is, and then praise Him for His manifest attributes — which will then spur us to serve Him for the exertion of those attributes in all His works and ways. Have you thanked Him today? And does your life praise Him?

Quote for the Day: “Mercy sets the Lord's disposition to save before us. Whereas our sin has rendered us miserable and vile; but God’s provision through Jesus Christ paved an enduring way of mercy for us.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for your favor and mercies that are evident in my life everywhere I go. I testify to your goodness in every created things, and especially for saving me through Jesus Christ. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayer,
