Today’s Text: Nahum 1:1-13
Key Verse: Nahum 1:7 (RSV): "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble;
he knows those who take refuge in him."
Life's challenges can make it hard to trust God's goodness. They can easiky make the natural man question His love, power and presence in his struggles. But we are blessed today with a Scripture that reminds us of God's character, helping us trust Him even when it's so hard to do so.
The Lord stirred the heart of Prophet Nahum to speak to the people of Judah during King Manasseh's reign (697-642 BCE) when the Assyrians dominated the world notoriously and brutally, and Nineveh their (Assyrian) capital was a symbol of oppression and wickedness. Men of Judah suffered reproach so much that it wasn't easy to see God's goodness or presence at the time. But this prophets introduces God's character, in a new dimension, contrasting His goodness with Assyria's wickedness, and assuring Judah of God's justice, faithfulness, protection and goodness.
As Christians, understanding this background spurs us to trust, still, that the Lord is good even when everything else say otherwise. God's inherent goodness comforts us in the day of trouble. He always loves His people and shows compassion on them in difficult times. What are you passing through right now? The Lord knows and understands your struggles. So you are not alone. Trust God's faithfulness, even when circumstances seem contrary. His promises endure.
Action Steps: Journal God's goodness in your life. Share your struggles with a trusted friend or mentor. Acknowledge your struggles and doubts. Reflect on God's goodness and faithfulness.
Quote for the Day: "God's faithfulness always shines brighter than our darkest moments; and His goodness is our greatest comfort in troubled times." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for this precious reminder that in difficult times, your goodness is unwavering. Please help me to trust Your goodness now and always. Let Nahum 1:7 anchor my heart and remind me of Your presence and faithfulness, and let my present struggles strengthen my faith in You. Thank You Lord for being my stronghold — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
