God’s “Let” Diary (Part 23) — Let God Be God

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, July 3, 2020

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 18:19-46

Key Verses: 1 Kings 18:24 (KJV): “And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Isaiah said: “For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed” (Is 9:16). Inconsistency and hesitation was the common mark of Israel’s Northern Kingdom under Ahab because this king whored after Jezebel and her strange gods, and caused the people to err. But for Elijah and a few other prophets who did not bow their knees to Baal, the entire kingdom would have been in total apostasy. Indeed, many backsliden prophets of God had already sold their souls to Baal.

It was during these difficult days that Elijah was raised up to persuade the people to forsake Baal and return to the true and living God. But when they failed to yield the call; it was necessary for God to showcase the foolishness of their confidence in Baal. Those who worship Baal thought that it is the power behind the sun, and is the lord of heaven, which causes fire, created water and gives rain. But these assumptions were debunked one after the other. Baal could not speak for itself, but a mere human minister of Yahweh spoke by his own words and Baal could not give water for three years.

Baal after all, is no god at all because it failed the test of life, control and supremacy. Only Yahweh answers by fires, and even leaks the water. No other God beside Him. It is folly to abandon the Creator and worship created things. It is a mistake to think of Baal worship was a thing of the past. Modern day Baal manifests in different cultural confusion — from the Halloween, to hero and celebrity worship, and to most rudimentary attachment to ideas, lifestyles, fashion, sexuality, materialism etc. Most people simply follow so called cultural celebrations and social organizations because they lack understanding of the true nature of idolatry. Why not stop pursuing people or things that are not able to save those who call on them. But those who call in the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13).

Quote for the Day: "Idolatry manifests itself easily through public opinion and vogue. Public opinion is often popular, but popular does not mean right. ” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to stand when those around me fall. Make the the beacon in the night to those who have lost their ways, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
