Today’s Text: Daniel 9:1-21
Key Verses: Daniel 9:16 (KJV) — “O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.”
I woke up to pray midnight and before I could get across my secret corner, my phone light was on. A message just arrived from Elder Oyekola, a respected member of House of Prayer, sharing a most timely clarion call for prayer for Nigeria: my Jerusalem, and Aminu Yahaya Sheriff, a persecuted believer. God burdened my heart to pray immediately, and as I turned to scriptures, the Spirit of God in confirmation has prepared another biblical 'let' for today’s meditation. Therefore, like Daniel, I understood by the Scriptures that I must charge the body of Christ to pray for this same cause.
We must arise and make confessions before the Lord, not only for the sins we have been guilty of, but of our faith in God, and dependence upon Him. We must make confession for our sorrow for sin, and our resolutions against it. Even if we like to point accusing finger to a leader or someone else; Daniel teaches us that as long as we are praying for our Jerusalem, our confession must be genuine and personal. As for him, he humbly confesses his sins and trust in God as the only God worthy to be feared and trusted. It was upon that background that he could believe for God's greatness, goodness, or His majesty and mercy. Our nations, like his, have been troubled for so many years: many innocent Leah Sharibus, various Pastor Lawan Andimis, countless righteous Aminu Yahaya Sheriffs, and innumerable James Wright Foleys’ souls are either groaning under persecution, in terror of death or already beheaded. For us to find God’s mercy, we must all arise and confess these horendous sins of our lands, and of ourselves.
Our prayers must go up to God; not in self righteousness but with an attitude that demonstrates self-abasing acknowledgment of God’s righteousness, and our own penitence. We have suffered afflictions enough to bring us to turn to God's truth, but instead we are too religious to realize our true need for Him. Daniel understood that God is always ready to pardon sin, and upon that faith, he intercedes for Jerusalem. Let us also return to the place of prayer, where we may obtain mercies from God. If we do, all the reproach that we have suffered, and the ruins God's work in our hands have experienced should be hastily alleviated.
Quote for the Day: "Our prayers must go up to God; not in self righteousness but with an attitude that demonstrates self-abasing acknowledgment of God’s righteousness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, we repent before you on behalf of our land. Shine your face on us dear God. We need you now, more than ever before. We thank you that you are rich in mercy and full of grace. Bring honor to your Name, Oh Lord, and deliver your righteous people from pain, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
