Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, October 11, 2024
Today’s Text: John 14:25-31
Key Verse: John 14:27 (ESV): "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."
Long ago a man sought the perfect picture of peace. Not finding one that satisfied, he announced a contest to produce this masterpiece. The challenge stirred the imagination of artists everywhere, and paintings arrived from far and wide. Finally the great day of revelation arrived. The judges uncovered one peaceful scene after another, while the viewers clapped and cheered. The tensions grew until only two pictures remained veiled.
There was no doubt at the end of the day that the painting that featured a tumultuous waterfall that cascaded down a rocky precipice; which the crowd could almost feel its cold, penetrating spray. It features a stormy-gray clouds that threatened to explode with lightning, wind and rain. In the midst of the thundering noises and bitter chill, a spindly tree clung to the rocks at the edge of the falls; with one of its branches reaching out in front of the torrential waters as if foolishly seeking to experience its full power. But there was a little bird that had built a nest in the elbow of that branch. Content and undisturbed in her stormy surroundings, she rested on her eggs. With her eyes closed and her wings ready to cover her little ones, she manifested peace that transcends all earthly turmoil.
Peace is not that we'd be exempt from the cares and the calamities of life. No. We'd face some troubles which are incidental to human life. But we can find calm within even while the storm rages without. Our hearts can be so free from fear. That's the revelation here. Jesus assures us that He leaves us a legacy of peace. And this peace is just a word or a wish. It is an actual gift which He imparts to us, as the angels’ message was when they announced His birth. He is our peace. And the peace we find in Him is not as the world giveth. This contrast based on the emptiness of the world’s salutations versus the reality of God's gift to us. He gives us “His own peace,” which passeth all understanding.
Action Steps: Reflect on things troubling your heart. Surrender your anxieties to God and trust in His peace. Meditate on scripture, pray, and focus on God's presence.
Quote for the Day: "We must not seek such peace that promises absence of trouble, but one that has God present in the midst of trouble." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Lord, please fill me with Your peace, calming my fears and troubles. Help me trust in Your presence and provision. You are my Prince of Peace: please let Your peace guard my heart and mind. Reign in my heart, and still my worries. Let Your peace, which transcends all understanding, guard my heart and mind — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
