Today’s Text: Isaiah 28:5-12
Key Verse: Isaiah 28:9 (NKJV): “Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts?”
We necessarily evolve from stage to stage. No child escapes passing from breastfeeding to other sources of nourishment. That moment is called weaning—when a child's transition from being dependent on their mother's milk to consuming solid food—the season of life in which the human body learns the patience to understand its new level of life and need. And just like when to wean is never a child’s personal decision—something influenced by mothers’ ways, work and will.
This season, in Bible term refers to any significant spiritual milestone, in time, that marks the readiness of a child of God to participate in Israel’s family and community rites of worship. For instance, in Bat Mitzvah, a coming of age ceremony was held for Jewish boys and girls at age of 12 or 13 to mark adulthood and spiritual readiness.
The weaning metaphor runs through the Bible. Paul compares the spiritual growth of Corinthian church to the process of weaning, suggesting that they were spiritually immature as expected (1 Corinthians 3:1-2). The author of Hebrews (5:12-14) expresses disappointment that Hebrews still needed someone to teach them elementary truths of God’s word at a time they ought to be teachers themselves.
It is in this same spirit that God, in today’s text, calls on His children who needed to be entreated to understand His message. Anyone who needs to be fed in that way still lives on milk, is an infant, and is neither acquainted with the teaching about righteousness nor have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. In this text, God’s wisdom seeks us out to teach us knowledge and make us understand teachings.
Quote for the Day: “Kiddos that are weaned from the milk portrays a level of maturity. When God weans us from our weaknesses, He moves us into strength.“
Prayer: Dear Lord, with all the other things that I hold onto, that I grasp for, that I put my hands around, to find hope in; I pray Lord that I would learn to be like a weaned child, to grow accustomed away from those things, to put my hope in You alone. Help me with so to do by your grace and your Holy Spirit — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
