Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, April 2, 2024
Today’s Text: Romans 5:12-21
Key Verse: Romans 5:20 (ESV): "Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.”
This Scripture is one of the most missinterpreted and abused text on grace. But the Holy Spirit is turning His illuminating light on it this morning. He wants us to understand that it is not a text of indulgence but a caution against it because knowing that grace shines brighter than the depths of our darkness helps us to embrace grace rather than sin. And, of course, we'd make no excuses and give no justification for sin.
In the midst of exploring the depths of human depravity and the magnanimity of divine grace, the Apostle Paul pens a verse that shatters any attempt to justify sin. Looking at the context of the letter, Paul intends this verse as a watershed moment in his theological argument. He has spent chapters outlining the universal human condition of sinfulness and the gracious response of God in Jesus Christ.
Against this backdrop, the apostle highlights the incongruity between sin's magnitude and grace's magnitude. Sin's expansion is met with grace's explosion! God's grace is not merely a match for sin but an overflowing abundance that drowns it out. Therefore, the verse proclaims the triumph of grace over sin, the victory of mercy over judgment, and the lavishness of God's love for humanity. May this truth astound and transform us, that we may reject any attempt to justify sin and instead revel in the boundless sea of grace.
Quote for the Day: "When our failures mount, grace overflows. In the face of our weakness, grace is our strength." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to embrace this boundless grace. Help us to allow your grace to transform our lives, so that we may reflect the radiant glory of Your purpose. May our lives be lived to the extent that our depravity is totally outdone by Your benevolence and the law of sin is trumped by the law of grace and Your justice is satisfied, not sidestepped — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
