Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 1:1-17
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 1:3 (ESV): "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
I woke up with one of Christianity's most fascinating topic really bubbling in my spirit. It is the matter of grace (charis) and peace (eirēnē): two foundational concepts in Christian theology, which are of utmost wmphasis, particularly, in Paul's epistles. Grace has been summed to be God's unearned favor and salvation through Jesus Christ God's free gift received through faith, and is the basis for Christian living.
In the case of peace, it has been proven to not necessarily mean the absence of conflict, but wholeness and harmony resulting from God's grace. Thus, making peace a fruit of grace: something that characterizes Christian relationships and witness. That is why Paul's salutation to a rather troubled church as the Corinthians' was: "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Implications for today's world and church is therefore clear. Though we are troubled and buffetted, the Bible's emphasis on God's unmerited favor and grace in salvation and Christian living helps us recognize, embrace a d enjoy peace as our spiritual reality, which transcends any circumstance. Amd not only do we enjoy grace and peace, we are called to extend the same to others. The news of division and chaos in the Corinthian church .ust have devastated Paul, yet giving grave a d peace to others was mever an alternative forgone.
We are God's agent of grace and peace. And no matter the situation, we must foster harmony and unity in the church and beyond. Our identity and relationships must be rooted in God's grace and peace. Suppose a person is struggling with feelings of guilt and shame due to a past mistake and feels unworthy of God's love or is hesitant to share his struggles with others. Other fellow believers much approach him with kindness and compassion, imaging God's unmerited favor and forgiveness through Jesus Christ to such person(s). Our community of faith must, through words and actions, extend God's grace and peace to others and foster a culture of love, acceptance, and unity.
Quote for the Day: "Grace is the voice that calls us to change, and peace is the result of our obedience to that voice." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for your abundant grace, which reaches me in my darkest moments and lifts me up to new life. Help me to also extend this grace to others, that they may know your love and forgiveness. Grant me your peace, which surpasses all understanding, and guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. May this peace be the foundation of my relationships and the hallmark of my witness — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
