Grace and Truth from Jesus

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, June 30, 2024

Today’s Text: John 1:6-18

Key Verse: John 1:17 (ESV): "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."

The Law was a bridge between God and humanity, but it was never meant to be permanent. It was a temporary solution to show us our need for God. Just as a cast is removed once a bone is healed, the Law was set aside when Jesus came to introduces a new agreement between God and humanity: a new covenant based on grace and truth. This new covenant is built on relationship, not rules. In Christ, we live under the grace and freedom provided by His sacrifice on the cross, through which we experience God's love and forgiveness. In Jesus, we see a God who is loving, merciful, and kind. We experience a God who is for us, not against us. The Law showed our helplessness and need for God. It revealed our shortcomings and need for a Savior. Jesus meets that need, providing salvation and redemption. The Law revealed our flaws, the Lord fixes them. He provides the solution to our spiritual brokenness.

Are you thankful for the gift of salvation and the truth that sets us free? Has this gratitude filled your heart and shape your life? Friends, let this truth shape your understanding of God, yourself, and your relationship with Him. They help you grasp the depth of God's love and the need for Jesus in your life. To the Old Testament Israel, God seemed distant and strict, but through Jesus, He is Immanuel: the loving and merciful God, who lives within us. As a child I only saw my parents as strict disciplinarians, but as I grow older, I come to understand their love and guidance. In the same way, let us celebrate our source of grace and truth, Jesus Christ, who freed us from the Law, which only showed us our shortcomings, but couldn't fix them. Just as a mirror shows us our physical flaws but can't fix them, the Law revealed our spiritual flaws but couldn't solve them. Jesus, however, provides the solution.

Action Steps: Reflect and identify areas where you've been relying on law or rules instead of God's grace. Embrace God's unconditional love and forgiveness. Seek Jesus in your life, and share His love and kindness you've received with others.

Quote for the Day: "We don't receive God's grace in Christ as a license to sin, but a liberty to live in the power of His truth that sets us free." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for sending Jesus, who brought grace and truth into our lives. Help me move beyond mere rule-keeping and to embrace Your unconditional love. Reveal Your truth to me through Jesus' teachings. And empower me to extend Your grace and truth to others — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
