Today’s Text: John 1:14-18
Key Verse: John 1:16 (ESV): “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”
One of my favorite scriptures growing up, as a believer, is which says, “They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.” (Psalm 84:7) We serve the God who has plenitude of all things. John the beloved was describing something indescribable — how our Lord reveals true glory and is full of grace and truth. And in as much as we have become his body, not only has the fullness of Him fills all things in all, but we have all received, and grace for grace.
Today’s key verse was rendered in the above manner — “grace for grace” in the New King James Version, but We’ll see why most linguists prefer “grace upon grace.” The original preposition used to show the relation between the graces we receive out of the fullness of His own grace, is a revelation of continuum. Our Lord gives us grace upon grace, grace on top of grace; or in another way, we may give it a different construct: grace in exchange for, or instead of grace, grace!
You can catch a better glimpse of this if you take a thought of the ocean‘s caving waves, which rolls over in endless succession. Frederick Fyvie Bruce, a New Testament historical reliability scholar had said that we draw grace upon grace from the ocean of divine fullness, with one wave of grace being constantly replaced by a fresh one. O how sweet to know we never live on a stale grace with Jesus. And much more so, there is no limit to that supply so long as they are coming from the fullness in/of Jesus Christ.
How then would we dare trust our own efforts and despise such amazing, not just unmerited, but unwarranted freebie?! As you step into a new month today, let this fill your heart with deep-seated joy. Let it echo back to the reality of verse 14, which assures us that the Word Himself was made flesh is now dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. If Jesus is with you, you are walking in an endless succession of unmerited favor of/with God.
Quote for the Day: “For each level of maturity and for each day, we receive a sufficient or commensurate grace; but soon as a new day dawns for us, God bestows new graces in place of those graces.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, by your mercy, you brought me to the beginning of a new month, please grant me a new grace for the journey set before me. Help me to walk in the reality of the fullness which I have received in you, Lord Jesus. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayer,
