Today’s Text: 2 Kings 4:8-17
Key Verse: 2 Kings 4:13 (ESV): "And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” "
There are two possible ways of approaching the widow's decline of Elisha's offer to bring her matter before the king: The first is perhaps the fact that she had no wrong of which she might complain about. No quarrel with any neighbor, in respect of which she might need the help of one in power. Another way is, she finds joy and satisfaction that comes when you dwell among your own people; being surrounded by friends and families, with whom she lives peaceably.
The widow's initial honest confession of her limited resources and poverty compared with her bold declaration of "I dwell among my own people" testifies of how our community should foster and strengthen survival and prosperity of everyone. As a member of a community, especially of faith, God's provision and miracle in your life is to primarily to glorify Him and bless others. The affirmation of God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 22:18 also known as the Abrahamic Covenant or blessing is: "in you shall all the nations of earth be blessed."
Today's church likes to claim this Abrahamic blessing; but we fail to learn or walk in the Abraham's model which is willingness to part with any thing for God, so that we can have it made up to us with unspeakable divine dividends. The poor are always among us. There's always a person feeling isolated and alone nearby, struggling to find their place in the world. They may feel like a stranger, unsure of where they belong; but, can they, because of you, finally find their true identity and sense of belonging and community? This widow's confession reveals how she's been able to unlock God's provision and miracle to survive hard times!
Indeed, if we could learn from the cosmic order, no one would be so mean, weak or voiceless as to be unable to pull through life or be so totally alone. For though the distant planets stand alone, each one is influenced in its orbit by the power of another. Though they differ one from another in glory, they share sympathy, heat and lights one with another.
Quote for the Day: "When our community of faith embraces our true identity and oneness, we open ourselves up to God's abundant provision and love." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You with my own confession of limitations and needs. Like the widow, "I dwell among my own people." Like her, please help me to embrace my true identity and find my sense of belonging in You and my community of faith. Provide for me as only You can, and may I always trust in Your love and abundance — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
