Today’s Text: James 5:13-18
Key Verse: James 5:16 (ESV): “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
I’m missing my mother already. She so exemplify what a mother should be. When I was sick as a child, it is marvelous how quick her ears are tuned to perceive and attend to my pain. I wonder if she does not fall asleep. Nurses are wonderful, but may act differently than a mother. The cry of a dear child is certainly differently effectual than the cry of a dear patient. When I had a little quick breathing, my mother heard it before my nurse. Yet, mothers could not live in their child’s heart as God, who neither sleeps nor slumbers. His ears are already in our hearts—poor sinners as we are. He hears it when it breathes slow, He understands it when it breathers fast. There is no single desire on earth that the Lord does not hear while it’s in the heart. He only wants a sharing relationship of trust. When we trust Him, and express our cares in prayers, He is so quick to answer us.
An overall look on our text’s subject points us to confession of sin, not to God or a priest, but mutually to one to another. But the apostle points out how even more effective it is when we pray about it. Prayer is so effective because whatever has been in the thoughts and discussion between us are already loud enough in the tuned ears of God. He hears our prayer ahead of the breathe of it; but He wants us to breath them out in trust that He controls the evolution of events in our lives, and in all the world.
Quote for the Day: “Condition and environment are no deterrent to prayer. Hezekiah was sick unto death; and Jonah was deep in the belly of the fish at the bottom of the Sea—when they prayed and God’s tuned ears heard them.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, help me to trust you more, in whatever situation, so much that my prayers in faith shall always rise up to you—in Jesus name. Amen.
