Today’s Text: Joshua 23:1-13
Key Verse: Joshua 23:8 (NKJV): “But you shall hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have done to this day.”
A clear example of a valedictory speech is before us this morning. Joshua was old and dying. He had led God’s people across the Jordan, against Jericho and many other cities. He had supervised the distribution of their inheritance, and now it might be that time to go to the ways of the Saints, and God’s people might have to face the future on their own. Therefore, it was important for Joshua to remind them to hold unto the Lord—something that he himself emulated from Moses, and had followed all the years of his life and leadership.
By “hold fast to the Lord” he means hold unto or cleave to the Lord through constant obedience, entire affection, faithful service, and worship. Joshua was well qualified to charge them this way because he sought God and followed His will as proclaimed by Moses. This led to his success in bringing them into their inheritance and promise. This would also certainly be the key to Israel’s future, and to anyone’s who reads this devotional guide: “Hold fast to the LORD your God!”
Our generation is ebbing away because people are failing to submit to God’s instructions. Our future is at risk for the same reason. While there were many grievous things amiss among the people of Israel in the days of Joshua, it was commendable that they had not forsaken the Lord their God. The way to make people better, in any generation is to lead them to the best spiritual decisions. Therefore, we must all seek God, submit to the Word of God, and trust Him, His Words, and the power of His Spirit for our future.
Quote for the Day: “In the spiritual positive and negative, the opposite of hold fast is not lose up. It is omit. For there is no middle ground to n the spirit. You are either here or there.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for this exhortation. Please make me steadfast in You. Help me to believe Your truth instead of the enemy's lies. And help me to be an example to others — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
