I think, Therefore I am

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 30, 2024

Today’s Text:  1 Samuel 17

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 17:45 (KJV): "Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied."

Why are we so easily beaten down and defeated. Is it not because we think too little of ourselves and the grace of God in us?! Today’s meditation topic is built around the famous Latin phrase "Cogito, ergo sum:" "I think, therefore I am," which was coined by the French philosopher René Descartes. As Christians, we believe, by Scripture revelation that what a man thinks in his heart is who he is (Proverbs 23:7). Yes, people are and become what they think. That's why Mark Twain admonishes that we keep away from people who try to belittle our thoughts about us. He claims that only small people always belittle others. Really great people make you think that you, too, can become great.

The brothers of David were small thinkers. So, they belittled David's thought about himself. They doubted his ability to defeat Goliath but God gave him the courage and strength to face him. Today's text not only shows how negative influences can try to hold us back, but it reveals that nurturing the power of our trust in our abilities through God can unearth remarkable things. We will always have people like Eliab and Joseph's brothers who would belittle our dreams; but to become who we desire in life, it is important we surround ourselves with positive influences that bring out the best in us. We must nurture our faith in God, and in who He says we are. Before David said those words in verse 45, he already believed in his heart what he thought would happen. While the entire army oo⁰⁰f Israel were thinking about the power of Goliath, David was thinking about the power of God that is at work within him. Brethren, you are what you think.

Action Step: Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Inspire and empower yourself to strive for great things. Overcome self-doubt. Believe in your full potential.

Quote for the Day: "Doubt may shake abd shape our world, but we can unleash an incredible success power when our thoughts are shaped by God's word." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You seeking a renewed mind, transformed by Your powerful word and grace. Help me to let go of old patterns, negative thoughts, and limiting beliefs. Renew my mind with Your truth, that I may see myself, others, and the world around me through Your eyes. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, that I may think, speak, and act with wisdom, love, and discernment. Help me to focus on things that are true, noble, and praiseworthy, and to cast down any thoughts that exalt themselves against Your truth. Give me a mind that is steadfast, unshakeable, and fixed on You — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
