Today’s Text: Matthew 4:18-22
Key Verse: Matthew 4:19 (ESV): “And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.””
We now live in a generation in which nobody wants to follow anything, or anyone anymore. We prefer individualism. The reason is not far fetched: We prefer the freedom to be who we desire to be. So, we may not really fancy the idea of “Follow me, and I will make you…” In Jesus’ idea of following, a time of fellowship with Him was necessary in order for them to be well forged for the service intended for them.
God’s utmost has always been to make His men: it might take Him a day journey, years of sojourn, nights and days in the belly of the fish, a few years of discipleship, some whooping, or chains, and/or 40 days of trials in the wilderness; God is always never in a hurry to parade untested and unprepared men. Even in the full matter of Christ’s messiahship; apart from waiting the fullness of time to send Him forth, he had to go through gradual human path and stage to unfold His purpose.
Our Lord never hurried. He set a noble example of learning and discipleship. And following Him remains man’s only strategy for divine making today as always. Christians must learn to follow Christ so that His work in their hands are only inspired with His Spirit, earnestness, passion and results. We cannot direct our own course. We must follow Him to earn His good company; be who He wants us to be, and ultimately escape the danger of eternal damnation. We must follow Him through the narrow way to heaven.
Quote for the Day: “Jesus is our life. We got no choice other than to follow Him, obey His precepts and copy His example. And not only shall we be like Him, but we shall do the works He did and greater.” — Simon Olatunji
Prayer: Dear Lord and Father, I know that following you is not always easy. Please help me to put you first in my life and to follow you with all my heart, just as your disciples did when they left everything behind to follow you. Help me to surrender my own desires and plans to your will, and to walk in the path that you have set before me — in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
