Today’s Text: John 2:18-25
Key Verse: John 2:24 (ESV): "But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people."
This verse captures Jesus' discerning knowledge of mankind. It emphasizes that He does not rely on external validation or human testimony to understand people. He already knows how people make promises they can't keep all the time. He knows that their testimony of others are schewed, biased and unreliable. He understands man's selfishness and motifs. Unlike man, when God makes promises, He is absolutely incapable of not keeping them. But as God, Jesus is not surprised at our unrelenting unreliability. He knows how brothers jilt brothers and brethren fail one another. He knows us. The word "knew" in the text is translated from the Greek verb that means to know, understand, perceive, recognize, acknowledge, and/or have intimate knowledge of a thing or person.
In context, John 2:24 depicts Jesus' knowledge or understanding of our nature. We don't know people's intentions towards us; but He knows it all. He discerns our faikings, standing, understanding and faith. He possesses complete knowledge of all things. He sees beyond outward appearances, and understands individuals' thoughts and hearts. Knowing this should comfort, strengthen and guide us. Unfortunately, instead of seeking intimacy with One who knows us and knows our world better, we often trust ourselves, unlike Christ, into the hands of people who give us heartbreak.
This is a lesson to learn from the Master. Humans are marked for their character deficit and a promise and fail syndrome. He still loves them. We shouldalso love them. This is because these deficit stem from the sinful nature and the weaknesses of the flesh. It is despite these failures that God's faithfulness still continues to pursue, redeem and use us for His glory. We would not be omniscient like Jesus, knowing and understanding thoughts, intentions and hearts of men; but as we follow the Master and walk in His light, we can gain insight into such profound understanding of human nature. We can receive His discernment and wisdom in dealing with people. And, our relationships and communities will be happier and better.
Action Steps: Trust God's promises and desist fro men's. Rely on His faithfulness. Seek refuge in His unchanging love.
Quote for the Day: "What we know about people is often because we hear of and see the things they do, but God is able to enlighten our hearts of understanding to perceive deeper things." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote).
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You because You are not a man, that You should lie, Nor a son of man, that You should repent. Have You spoken, and will not do? Or have You spoken, and will not make it good? Please grant me Your wisdom and discernment as I interact with others. Teach me to emulate the Master's example, understanding human nature and trusting Your guidance — in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
