Today’s Text: Psalm Psalm 121:1-8
Key Verse: Psalm 121:4 (NKJV): “Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
As Israel continues to struggle under intense pressure of the latest Israel-Palestinian war on this sixth day of unthinkable rocket wars and destruction, we are reminded of two things: first, of the validity and reliability of biblical texts, which already highlighted the age long rivalry, hatred and bitterness that existed between men of Palestine and Israel. And, secondly, we are reminded of the promise of divine intervention and protection available for the nation of Israel.
Today’s scripture is a charge to all God’s people not to rely upon men and means, machinery or any second causes for safety and protection. No, we cannot depend upon the strength of the hills—i.e., princes and great men. No! Our help will not come from them. David wants us to direct our confidence in God only. Brethren, as we pray for Israel, in this current battle, we must remember that even in the battles of our own lives, we must lift up our eyes above the hills.
Let us learn to look up to God, the maker of all earthly things. All our help is in God—we must expect it from him alone, in his own way alone, and in his own time alone. Let us find comfort in this psalm even though times are tough, enemies are raging, difficulties are real, and dangers are in its peak. It is the wakeful, watchful, never weary, never sleeping constancy, wisdom and power of the Lord that works the safety of those that put their trust in him.
Quote for the Day: “Regardless of battles within or without, God’s people, under His shade, may lay in green pastures with delight and assurance.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, we are reminded of your love and compassion for Israel. We raise them up to you, and pray for those suffering. We ask that you provide peace in this crisis, and protection and comfort for all those who have been impacted. We lift our prayer to you, Lord, hear us and keep us safe from enemies — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
