Today’s Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 19, 2019
Today’s Text: 2 Kings 4:8-17
Key Verse: 2 Kings 4:13 (NIV): “And Elisha said to Gehazi, "Now tell her, 'Look, you have gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?'" "I have a home among my own people," she replied.”
The scripture “God is not mocked, whatsoever a man sows, he shall reap” Is one of our most quoted recompense text, but also probably the most misapplied or ignored text. While we all want kind rewards, we often fail the test of kindness. This woman of Shunnem probably had some humanly justifiable reasons not to treat Elisha kindly. Religiously, she was an infidel. Spiritually, an alien, and at that time, Jews had no such close interaction with her people. Socially, though she was clothed with anonymity, she was a woman of high rank and riches that Elijah may not be as privileged to reach. Materially, she was content in her world, and seems to want no interference. “I dwell among my people!” She said.
However, like her, we must learn to dislodge our sense of comfort and class, and allow God’s fire of kindness towards people who are different than we are to kindle in our heart of faith. Against all odds, she showed kindness to a servant of God, and the God whom he served rewarded her for her. We release the spiritual law: "Give, and it shall be given unto you" when we light the fire kindness. She lost nothing. We’d lose nothing. Rather, generosity and hospitality to a prophet beget a prophet's reward; and kindness to a righteous man begets a righteous man's reward.
Quote for the Day: “We must learn to dislodge our sense of comfort and class, and allow God’s fire of kindness towards people who are different than we are to kindle in our heart of faith.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for convicting my heart against hostility to others. Help me to grow in the love of Christ that demonstrates itself in gracious disposition to all men, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
