Kindness Returns

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Wednesday, July 10, 2019

Our Text: Proverbs 11:14-21

Key Verse: Proverbs 11:17 (ESV): “A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.

When William McKinley was President of the United States, he has to appointment an ambassador to a foreign country among two equally qualified candidates. But McKinley was quick to automatically disqualify one of them on the ground that America needs considerate men. McKinley was a Congressman, and during that time, had observed an inconsiderate action by the disqualified man. He was once in a bus with him at a rush hour when an elderly woman got on, carrying a heavy clothes basket, and no one got up to offer her a seat. She walked the length of the bus and stood in the aisle, hardly able to keep her balance as the vehicle swayed from side to side.

Though the man was sitting next to where the woman was standing, but wasn’t kindly disposed toward her. Instead of getting up and helping her, he deliberately shifted his newspaper so it would look like he hadn’t seen her. McKinley walked down the aisle, graciously took her basket, and offered her his seat. The man was unaware that anyone was watching, but that one little act of selfishness would later deprive him of perhaps the crowning honor of his lifetime.

The God we serve is not only full of mercy, He is watching us to be the same way. He is well pleased when He sees us exercise the same towards our fellow-creatures. In this text, tenderness is revealed as actually not towards others. Mercifulness is portrayed as a self-defense, accruing for our own earthly and eternal interests.

Quote for the Day: “Selfishness is like the blindspot In a moving car. It simply hides an approaching danger, and cripples good judgement.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to be merciful, so that my feet may overcome its fatigue and make haste to help the needy. Help me to overcome my heart’s weariness to be touched by the feelings of others’ infirmities—in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
