Today’s Text: Hebrews 12:3-11
Key Verse: Hebrews 12:11 (ESV): “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
The global order of things operate operate by laws. And among all of the laws, none would have any effect if people lack discipline. God's Word tells us that all discipline is necessary for training toward righteousness. Generally, since the Fall, man does not like to succumb to, or be subject to discipline; but a disciplined life tends to godliness, and comes from love. As a parent, I understand how love drives me to hold my children up to right standards of living — which of course calls for discipline. Throughout Scripture, God does the same for us. He teaches and leads us through discipline toward Himself.
Discipline is an unsung law that govern life: athletes do not excel except they give their body to disciplines. Farmers have failed harvest except they cultivate the discipline of being instant in season and out of season. God always seeks opportunities to bless and increase us, but those opportunities always come like hard work. Life always tests our discipline before presenting us the next level. That’s why no child is born already standing up and running. We all crawl our way up to the feet. We all need some basic spiritual and physical discipline for our heads, hands, hearts, and habits to experience the next level that God has in store for us.
As a believer, strive daily to discipline your heart in diligent praying. Cultivate the discipline of obedience to grow in intimacy with God. Develop an attitude of praise. Grow in pursuit of God. Discipline your head and mind to discern godly ways and though daily meditation in the word of God. It is believers who give their hearts to the discipline of the Master that are called disciples. They give themselves daily to the discipline of their Master by watching and praying, worshipping, submitting, serving, giving, loving, and forgiving—always.
Quote for the Day: “The discipline of obedience is not just necessary, it is rewarding. It helps set the race before us and helps set the crown upon us.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear God, I pray that with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in me, I will guard my heart in daily obedience and self-discipline. I pray that you would strengthen me with grace to follow You — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
